February 10, 2001 SHAVER WINS SECOND EAST BAY WINTERNATIONAL TITLE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TAMPA, FL - Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV held off a late-race charge by Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL to increase his bank account by $27,600 by winning the 25th Annual East Bay Raceway Winternationals Saturday night for the United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series. Shaver swept the program for his second East Bay Winternationals title driving the Simonton Windows/Poske's Performance Parts Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo. The 100-lap race win was worth $25,000, plus a $2,500 bonus for the repeat win to go with his 1999 title, and $100 from JE Pistons for winning the first 12-lap heat race. Shaver set fast time among the 69 entrants with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval in 14.571 seconds for an average speed of 82.355 miles per hour. Shaver took the lead on lap 79 when early race leader Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN broke coming off the fourth turn. Babb then charged into second spot to reel in the Shaver during the last ten laps of the race. Both Shaver and Babb ran out of cushion on the high side of the track, and began using their right-rear quarter panels as mud scrapers on the clay-packed East Bay concrete walls. Shaver tapped the third turn wall on lap 91, while Babb hit the fourth turn wall on lap 95 and 96. Babb took the lead in turn two after a lap 93 restart, but Shaver turned up the wick and passed Babb back for the point in turn three. After Babb's two tail slappers in turn four, Shaver was able to pull away for his second career UDTRA victory, both of which have come at East Bay Raceway. "I like this track so well, I just might move down here," Shaver said in the winner's circle. "I ran down low early in the race trying to be conservative, but Brad Malcuit built me the fastest motor here, so I went up top and went for it. Babb left me a wake up call on that restart, so I picked up the pace." Babb took the second spot in the Car City Company Rayburn/Dickens Monte Carlo, and Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI came home in the third spot driving the Parker Stores Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Chub Frank of Sugar Grove, PA finished fourth in the Mac Trailers Rocket/Draime Monte Carlo, and Davey Johnson of Greensburg, PA rounded out the top five in the Rocket Chassis Rocket/Draime Monte Carlo. Jackie Boggs of Grayson, KY was sixth in the McDonalds Swartz/T&H Monte Carlo, and Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH was the JE Pistons Hard Charger of the Race after starting 24th and finishing seventh in the McCullough Motorsports Boss/Pro Power Monte Carlo. UDTRA point leader Steve Francis of Ashland, KY brought his Valvoline Oil/Mopar Performance Rocket/Stanton Dodge RT home in the eighth spot. Francis now holds a 38-point lead over Shaver in the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series points chase. Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, IL finished ninth in the Turner Bus Service Rayburn/Custom Monte Carlo, and the tenth spot went to Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI in the Performance Roofing Systems Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Shaver grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag from the pole position, but outside front row starter Ray Tucker of Greensboro, NC took the point in turn three bringing Francis with him into the second spot. Steve Boley of West Liberty, IA hit the backstretch wall on the second lap to bring out the first of 11 caution flags. After the restart, Francis used the inside groove to pass Tucker for the lead in turn two, as Tucker began to fade. O'Neal passed Tucker for second spot a lap later, and Steve Lucas of Charleston, WV moved by Tucker to advance to third spot. Francis cut down a left-rear tire while leading on lap 11 to bring out the second caution flag of the race. That put O'Neal in front, with Lucas moving up to second, but a smoking engine under the caution flag sent Lucas to the pits for the evening. Shaver moved up to second, with Babb in third when the field went back to green. O'Neal moved to the high side of the track and was never challenged for the point, but behind Shaver and Babb, wholesale position changes were taking place throughout the top ten around the entire track. On lap 27, Babb passed Shaver for the second spot with Boggs in fourth, and Frank in fifth. By the halfway point, O'Neal had a comfortable lead over Babb, with Shaver in third, Frank in fourth, and 1997 UDTRA Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR had moved up to fifth, with Boggs fading to seventh behind Weaver. On lap 54, Babb jumped the cushion in turn four and lost several spots. Babb and Moyer both cut down tires on lap 57 to bring out the seventh caution flag. For the restart, it was O'Neal in front followed by Shaver, Frank, Weaver, and Mars, who had charged into the top five. On lap 62, Frank passed Shaver for second, and on lap 73, Shaver moved from the inside to the cushion on the outside to pass Frank back for second. Behind this battle, Mars battled with Boggs for the fourth spot. On lap 75, Shaver began to reel in O'Neal, and on lap 79, O'Neal suddenly slowed in turn four with a trail of smoke behind his race car. O'Neal retired for the evening as Shaver took the lead. With 12 laps to go, Shaver held the top spot followed by Frank, Weaver, Mars and Moran. On lap 89, Weaver brought out a caution flag with a cut tire. As the field lined up for the restart, Babb had climbed back into the seventh spot. On lap 91, Shaver bounced hard off the third turn wall, but kept going, as Babb ran as high as the walls would let him to pass Francis, Boggs, and Moran into the fourth spot. The final caution flag came out on lap 96. Babb shot past Mars and Frank into the second spot on the restart and passed Shaver for the lead in turn two. Shaver mashed his right foot through the radiator and powered back into the lead in turn three. Babb raced hard through the fourth turn and slapped the wall twice, but kept going, while Mars passed Frank for third spot in the closing laps. In other action, Shaver, Tucker, Francis, Lucas, Babb, and O'Neal took heat race wins with Lucas taking the Scott Performance Wire Bonus Award. In 12-lap Consolation Race action, Terry English of Benton, KY won the Renegade Transporters 1st Consy, with Booper Bare of Rockridge Baths, VA winning the Polaris ATVs 2nd Consy, and Schlieper winning the 3rd Consy. The final three events of the 3rd Annual UDTRA Sunbelt Tour will be held at Volusia Speedway Park in Daytona Beach, FL on February 15, 16, and 17. The main events on February 15 and 16 will be $5,000-to-win 30 lappers on the ½-mile clay oval. The UDTRA Pro DirtCars will conclude the UDTRA Sunbelt Tour with a 50-lap $10,000-to-win main event on February 17. The schedule for the UDTRA Volusia Speedway Park events will have the gates opening at 3 p.m., with hot laps set for 5:30 p.m., and racing scheduled for 7 p.m. each night.
