OPENING NIGHT AT EAST BAY TO O'NEAL!!!

Don O'Neal of Martinsville,IN captured the opening night of the Renegade
STARS Racing Series sanctioned "25th Silver Anniversary Late Model
Winternationals" at East Bay Raceway in Tampa (Gibsonton),FL Monday.
Driving the Indiana Department of Tourism/O'Neal Wood Products/C.J. Rayburn
Race Cars/Rayburn Racing Engines/Real Racing No. 71o Chevrolet Monte Carlo,
O'Neal jumped into the lead from his pole starting spot and lead all 50
laps to pocket the $5,000 top prize. Davey Johnson, who started 19th,
worked his way past Billy Moyer for second with only two laps remaining to
garner runner-up honors with Moyer third, Dale McDowell fourth and 18th
starting Steve Shaver fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were
outside pole sitter Brian Birkhofer, 22nd starting Chub Frank, Delmas
Conley (the last car on the lead lap), followed by 14th starting Mike
Balzano and Greg Lucas.
At the drop of the green flag O'Neal powered into the lead which he would
never give up with McDowell, Jackie Boggs, Birkhofer and Lucas trailing at
the end of the first lap. Before lap two could be completed Boggs lost the
handle in turn two bringing out the races first of six cautions. O'Neal
pulled away from the field on the restart as Dan Schlieper shot into fourth
and then grabed third from Birkhofer on lap 3. Caution for a crash
involving Scott James, Terry English and Shannon Babb slowed the field
before lap four could be completed. James dropped from the action as did
English and Babb a few laps later after heading pitside for repairs.
O'Neal again pulled out to a healthy margin once the green replaced the
yellow with Moyer shooting past McDowell for second on lap 4. Rick Eckert
worked his into the top five on lap 6 as O'Neal was out in front by more
than 10 car lengths. Lap 11 saw Dennis Erb Jr. pound the turn one wall
bringing out another yellow and dropping him from the race. By Lap 15 the
top five running order had O'Neal in front by eight car lengths over Moyer
with Schlieper, Eckert and McDowell trailing. Five laps later the caution
was waving once more when Balzano suffered a flat tire.
At the halfway mark O'Neal enjoyed a five car length lead over Moyer with
Schlieper, Eckert and McDowell trailing followed by Birkhofer, Johnson, Tim
Yeager, Frank and Conley. Moyer ran down O'Neal with 15 laps to go when
Matt Miller lost the handle in turn four right in front of the leaders.
O'Neal and Moyer both clipped Miller but were able to continue. A great
four car battle for the lead once the race was restarted saw some very
exciting action as Moyer worked O'Neal with Schlieper and Eckert going at
it. Schlieper and Moyer made contact exiting turn two on lap 44 and Eckert,
with no place to go when Schlieper checked up, banged hard off of Schlieper
and into the inside concrete wall. Both Eckert and Schliper retired to the
pits with damage to their cars ending their great runs.
With six laps to go O'Neal again pulled away from Moyer. Steve Shaver made
a bonzai move exiting turn four with three laps to go to move past
Birkhofer for fifth and with two laps remaining Johnson worked underneath
of Moyer for second but could not catch O'Neal who took the checkered flag
nearly two seconds in front of Johnson.
The $27,000 event drew a "Winternationals" record 92 cars to the
semi-banked 1/3rd mile which turned rough after nearly a day and half of
steady rainfall over the week-end. Greg Lucas set a new single-lap track
record during CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the Clock" Time Trials with his
fast lap of 14.577 seconds. Taking heat race wins were Dan Schlieper,
Jackie Boggs, Delmas Conley (the SCOTT PERFORMANCE WIRE Heat Race Bonus
winner), Billy Moyer, Rick Eckert and Terry English. The triple MASTERSBILT
RACE CARS "B" Mains were won by Davey Johnson, Jeep VanWormer and Donnie
Moran while Don O'Neal earned the pole for his triumph in the ISKY RACING
CAMS Dash. The East Bay Raceway "Winternationals" Invitational Dash was
captured by Ed Dixon.
